Vanadium - metal rock - a race with the devil

New uses for HSLA in the automotive industry have driven demand for ferrovanadium. Large OEMs utilize ferrovanadium contained in High Strength Low Alloy steel in a shift to stronger, but lighter cars. In 1995, there was no advanced high strength steel used in automobiles but by 2015, 50% of the steel used in automobiles was high strength steel. Global automotive manufacturers have announced intentions to grow use of advanced high strength steel. For example, the body of the 2015 VW Golf uses 80% high strength steel to make the car lighter and improve fuel efficiency, a corporate imperative given the controversy with emissions regulators.

As a result, VRFBs can be used in a variety of energy storage applications such as peak-shaving, load leveling, microgrids, wind and solar, off-grid power supplies, and uninterruptible power supplies.
